Evelyn Cresswell author

For most of her adult life, Evelyn Cresswell has been associated with the sisters of the Society of the Precious Blood at Masite, Lesotho. For those who knew them, the Society came to represent a rock of hope and faith for those who were engaged in the struggle for peace and justice in southern and South Africa.

In a careful plaiting of strands of memory, she interweaves her own pilgrimage of faith with that of the Society’s deepening involvement with the pain of South African society during the years of apartheid. It also embraces the personal story of one of the sisters, Mary Julian SPB.

They are stories which don’t terminate with the coming of democracy in 1994. Indeed they speak to an increasingly secular post-apartheid South Africa. The concluding stories speak movingly to our present problems of HIV/AIDS and of crime and may change our perspectives. This is a book that had to be written.
