Claudio Steinert author

Music is an integral part of life in Africa, but also in the worshipping life of the Church. Hence, the question is: How could the Church utilise music’s precious qualities in its missionary outreach in contemporary South Africa?

The book at hand gives a convincing answer to this question. By careful analysis of the music in former mission work, old hymns and new choruses, as well as Luther’s musical inventions, it outlines a few steps towards a liturgical employment of music in mission.

The author has been working for 10 years as a missionary in South Africa, as well as 11 years as a church musician in Germany. Hence, his argumentation is based on experience and backed by examples taken from the realm of congregational singing. Yet, it does not fall short of critical missiological reflection, either.

This South African case study uses the example of the musical mission work in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa. However, it provides all churches with valuable insights for their missionary outreach by means of music.

Claudio Steinert is the Senior Pastor for Southern Africa of the Evangelical Lutheran Mission
