Jonathan A. Draper editor

John William Colenso was consecrated the first Bishop of Natal on 30th November 1853 and died at his mission station at Bishopstowe in 1883. He gained notoriety in his own time for his critical scholarship of the Bible, his universalist theology and his unyielding fight for the Zulu people. In his understanding these three things were clearly connected. This collection of papers examines and evaluates the work of Colenso not only against the background of his time, but also his relevance for modern world in general and post-apartheid South Africa in particular.

Jonathan A. Draper is Professor of New Testament in the School of Theology, University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg
